Before The Whistle: Fulham v Manchester City

So, this is it – the final match of the 2024/25 season.

We face a Manchester City side that has had one of its worse seasons in recent memory. Though of course it’s all relative; they’ve finally hit form in the league and a win against us couple with an Arsenal loss will see them finish second. It’s probably just as well this one isn’t a European clincher – we’ve lost the last 17 against City and haven’t won in 21 games.

For us, we’re looking to secure a top half finish for the second time in the three seasons since we returned to the Premier League. Not too shabby, eh?

As is customary when you’re a Fulham fan, we go into the final game wondering which players we’ll be watching for the last time in a white shirt.

The main one this weekend is Tom Cairney. You’d hope that if our captain was riding off into the sunset, we’d be given enough time to mentally prepare. It’s been silent so far, so we can only assume and hope that talks over a new deal are ongoing.

Then there’s Antonee Robinson. He has said all the right things in the past about wanting to stay in SW6, but the vultures are circling, and we know these decisions are made in the boardroom, not in a player’s heart. We’ll be watching closely.

Finally, Marco. He says in his press conference that talks are yet to begin over a new deal, pouring cold water on reports he’d rejected it. It seems like both parties want this marriage to continue, the question is, with the transfer window looming, will it be for richer or for poorer?

It’s a time for reflection, and perspective. We’ve got something special cooking down by the Thames, and though this campaign is certainly one of “what if?”, if we go on to achieve glory in the future, it will be remembered as a stepping stone to greatness.
