Fulham 7-0 Luton Town - The look back
Fulham 7-0 Luton Town
It's difficult to know where to start. The logical place is this: Fulham are champions.
What a way to banish the memories our of finish line faltering. We secured the title yesterday in front of a red hot Craven Cottage, and in some style. We scored no fewer than seven against a shell-shocked Luton Town, who were merely victims of history.
Oh, and did I mention that Mitrovic broke the 46-game second tier scoring record?
The serb bagged two yesterday, the second coming with one of the last kicks of the game to take him to 43 goals this term. Incredible.
OK, let's go back to the first goal of the day - and our 100th of the season. It just had to be our captain, Tom Cairney, who rolled back the years with a big-game left-footed strike to set us on our way. It followed a slightly tense opening 20 when the occasion threatened to get on top of us. After that, there was no stopping the Whites.
Kenny Tete made it two 10 minutes later with a long-range ping. Then five more goals game after the break. Carvalho scored perhaps the goal of the game (though it's hard to choose) to make it three, before Mitro equalled Guy Whittingham's record with our fourth.
Bobby De Cordova Reid added a fifth before Jean Michael Seri bagged his first of the campaign, leaving just Harrison Reed as the only outfield player not to score this campaign. Penalty at Bramall Lane, anyone?
The Cottage was rocking like the European nights of yesterday as Mitro capped off the performance with his record-breaking goal. Cue a pitch invasion. Cue trophy hijinx. Cue the closing of the Cottage curtain at the crescendo of one of the greatest seasons we'll ever witness.
WHAT THEY SAID
▪️Marco Silva: The aim to be champions was always inside our dressing room. We knew what we wanted from the first day. It started to feel in October and November that we had been so dominant, we had to finish in this way. To score 106 goals is an amazing achievement for us and it's fantastic to see players growing with every match. The record of Mitro is fantastic and it was the best way to finish this game, the second from him.
▪️Farrell Monk: Last night was really special. Will definitely go down as one of the greatest nights in Fulham's history. Football memories to last a lifetime.
▪Peter Rutzler: The perfect reminder of how good Fulham are. 106 goals. First team in 60 years to score 50 home and away. First in 20 years to hit 100 in second tier. First title for 21 years. Mitrovic breaking records. Seventh league title in club history. Incredible.
