Everton 0-1 Fulham - The look back
A winning start - at Goodison Park! Let's hope it's the start of a season of unexpected joy.
The Whites are back in town.
What a wonderful start. Yes, we’d won the last two trips to Goodison Park prior to Saturday, but for Fulham fans there was still a healthy dose of PTSD associated with the ground after decades of nil points. But that may well have been put to bed thanks to Bobby De Cordova-Reid’s winner with about 15 minutes left on the clock.
Away wins are sweeter when they’re not really deserved, and let’s be honest, at half-time we’d have taken anything. And most Premier League sides would gladly take Bernd Leno if he was offered to them - but lucky for us he’s our number one.
And he showed exactly why, with his best performance in a Fulham shirt - of which there have already been so many in just one season. Everton striker Neal Maupay certainly played his part in Everton going in at the break with no goals, but you can take nothing away from our German shot-stopper.
Aleksandar Mitrovic started the game on the bench, coming on just before the hour mark. But the Serb tried to put any lingering concerns about the looming Saudi shadow to bed with a hardworking performance, capped by a clever ball to Andreas, who in turn set up BDR to seal the points.
The win is welcome relief, ahead of a must-not-lose derby with Brentford next week and tough trips to the Emirates and the Etihad. You Whites.
What they said
Marco Silva: We need more time to work; our preseason was not at the level that it should be so we missed a bit of energy. But we were able to win a football match and that shows we have the quality.
Bobby De Cordova-Reid: Perfect start to the season. Thanks to Bernd Leno.
Cam Ramsey: Three points on the board, season is well and truly up and running, get those targets signed and prepare for Brentford with a spring in the step. Pour that drink, stick the barbie on, we’re absolutely massive and Bernd Leno’s a certified shagger.
