Aston Villa 1-0 Fulham - The look back
It was meek and mild in the Midlands as the Whites fell to an in-form Aston Villa.
We rolled over a bit in that one.
We never get much at Villa Park of late, but at least we have a go. On Tuesday, we had one shot all game - and that missed the target. It came after 20 seconds, as Andreas Pereira nearly scored an impressive volley.
There are mitigating circumstances. Willian was injured in the warm-up, forcing Silva to bring in Solomon, who never really got going in the game. Our problems were compounded when Harry Wilson was forced off midway through the first half. It remains to be seen if we’ll see either again this term.
Villa’s goal came 20 minutes in, as Tyrone Mings looped a header in from a McGinn corner. And that was all she wrote.
We did put the ball in the net, though. Mings turned a Reed cross-come-shot into his own net, but the Fulham midfielder was offside, so it was rightly chalked off.
Never mind. We’ve got a golden chance to return to winning ways on Saturday, as we face Man City at home. Chuckle.
What they said
Marco Silva: We conceded a completely sloppy goal and that created the best scenario for Villa. They were quiet at that moment and they calmed down the game. The first half was clearly not our level, the standards were not at the level we normally play. We had a lack of desire and will to match the opposition side.
Bernd Leno: We deserved to lose today. It wasn’t our night, particularly in the first half. We looked flat and tired. We were better in the second half, but didn’t create too many chances.
Joe Sansom: Tosin with another great showing shouldn’t go unsaid. Similar to Bournemouth away I think tonight showed how much we miss Willian when he isn’t on the pitch. Solomon may show a moment of magic every now and again but he needs to do WAY more to justify signing him permanently IMO.
