Fulham 1-2 Manchester City - The look back
A narrow defeat and a strong performance against the Premier League Champions at home, blighted by injuries to Ream and Pereira.
We’ve known it all season, but a second solid showing against a Manchester City side accused of taking the competitive edge out of the Premier League confirms it: this Fulham side is different to the top-flight sides of old.
The game will be remembered for two nasty-looking injuries to key players. Tim Ream - who conceded an early penalty that was converted by Haaland to give City the lead - trudged off after 20 minutes with a broken arm. His incredible season comes to a disappointing end.
Andreas Pereira was stretchered around the hour mark, after an awkward fall on his leg. I think we’d all be surprised if he returned before August.
We rallied after the early penalty; Vinicius finished powerfully after 15 minutes to restore parity - vindication for the Brazilian after watching others lead the line in Mitro’s absence of late.
City took the lead again with a fantastic finish from Argentinian Julian Alvarez after 36 minutes. And that’s the way the scoreline would say, thanks in no small part to Bernd Leno, who put in another fantastic display.
Liverpool up next - there’s absolutely no reason to be afraid. You Whites.
What they said
Marco Silva: We cannot concede the goal in the way we did it. A great strike from Alvarez, I know, but the way we build in certain areas we cannot lose the ball in that way and we gave them a chance in their counter-attack. In the second-half, we were really competitive again. We didn’t create many chances, this is true, but we didn’t give many things to them either.
Antonee Robinson: Unlucky not to get more today against a top side. Thanks everyone for the great support. Hopefully a speedy recovery for Tim and AP too!
Sammy James: So weird to head out of a game after a defeat and feel so positive. Exceptional second half from Fulham, and we definitely deserved a point. Really hope Andreas and Tim's injuries aren't as bad as they looked, huge blow to lose both in just one game.
