Sunderland 2-3 Fulham - The look back
We didn't make it easy - but we did it. Into the hat for round five.
These two games against Sunderland have produced two wonderful cup ties. I can say that because we’ve come out of them as the side going through!
We got the job done in the north east - but it wasn’t easy. It looked like it might be after eight minutes, when Harry Wilson put us ahead. Our Welsh wizard had the bit between his teeth after that, and we could finally see glimpses of the Wilson we know and love, following his injury.
Silva made two changes at the break, and they combined to give us our second on the hour. Mitrovic somehow hooked the ball back onto the pitch before it went out, and Andreas Pereira slotted home.
But then Sunderland got the goal they threatened. It was Clarke again. But the revival didn’t last long, as Kurzawa added to his FA Cup tally, poking home to put the tie out of reach. The Black Cats got a second through Bennette on 90 minutes, but it was too little too late.
Silva cut a Batman-esque figure from high up in the gantry, and while he’ll admit it was far from perfect, he’ll be pleased we’ve progressed. And so are we. You Whites.
What they said
Marco Silva: We've been working hard to reach this level and create a winning mentality. I knew before the game that it wouldn't be the best, I made nine changes, but we are pleased.
Tom Cairney: Job done. Credit to Sunderland who pushed us all the way… My injury isn’t too bad.
Cam Ramsey: In all fairness, Sunderland are a particularly well-drilled outfit and I’m sure it won’t be long until they’re languishing in the Premier League’s relegation zone once again. So glad that’s over and done with.

Up next: Nottingham Forest (H) on Saturday
We’re having a good season, there’s no doubt. But for that to continue, we need to keep sides like Forest at arm’s length. Big game.
