Brentford 3-2 Fulham - The look back
Our seven-game unbeaten run ends. Brentford's continues. That one hurts, but we must move on.
Look, let’s have it right: no one likes losing a derby. Even when there’s nothing at stake. Both Fulham and Brentford will be in the Premier League next season. But a defeat is tough to take against our increasingly noisy neighbours.
It’s tough because we were never really at the races on Monday night. We started both halves poorly and, against a side like Brentford with the bit between their teeth, that’s enough to cost you.
The Bees went ahead through centre-back Ethan Pinnock, whose strike ricocheted off Tim Ream, leaving Leno rooted to the spot. Brentford hit the woodwork twice after that, but we managed to go in level at the break. Andreas Pereira’s free-kick rattled the bar and Manor Solomon (who else?) was there to nod the rebound into an empty net.
Sadly, that’s all we’d have to cheer about. Brentford took the lead again, after they were awarded the softest penalty you’ll see all season. But Ivan Toney made no mistake from the spot - he never does. So magnanimous in his triumphs, he even found time to mimic Mitro’s celebration again. The little worm.
The game was over when Matthias Jensen poked in from a tight angle, but we got a 99th-minute consolation from Carlos Vinicius to make it 3-2 on the night.
We must now move onto league leaders Arsenal at the Cottage on Sunday. Grab an upset there, and all will be forgiven, of course. You Whites.
What they said
Marco Silva: Disappointing night for us, disappointing performance as well. It was clearly our fault; we cannot play a derby away from home and start the way we started both halves.
Antonee Robinson: Wasn’t meant to be last night. Thank you for the support as always. We pick ourselves up & go again!
Sammy James: Rubbish second half from us. Did so well to get back into the match then threw it away by starting slowly again after the break. Was hoping we wouldn't miss Palhinha as much as we did, but it's pretty clear we aren't the same team without him.

Not an easy one, this. But not impossible either. Five days to lick wounds then go again.
