Before The Whistle: Manchester United v Fulham

Written by Drew Heatley on 23rd February 2024

It’s been 21 years since we got a win at Old Trafford. Since then, the Theatre of Dreams has caused more than a few sleepless nights.

Getting anything there this season will be a tough ask. Ten Hag’s United have won their last four in a row as they seek a late challenge to break into the top four.

The Whites go into the tie without Joao Palhinha, who’s serving a one-match ban for his 10th booking, picked up against Aston Villa last week. It’ll be Sasa Lukic or Harrison Reed replacing him – the latter is reportedly being eyed by England manager Gareth Southgate for forthcoming internationals.

Marco Silva says Nigerian international duo Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi are both ready to start, should he make the call, while Willian is facing a late fitness test.

Armando Broja returns to the squad following illness, but he’s unlikely to dislodge Rodrigo Muniz, who no one will need reminding is in the middle of a purple patch; it’s four in three for the Brazilian – and he’s now being eyed by the Brazil coach for a call-up. A goal at Old Trafford may well bring the tears back for the young striker.

These are the games in which Marco’s boys can thrive. The pressure is off – the expectation is gone. Let’s upset the apple cart. You Whites.
