Fulham 1-3 Liverpool - the look back
It's safe to say we're all happy to see the back of Liverpool this season.
Round four is over, then. And it was a familiar result.
We never get tonked by Liverpool – and that’s great. But we rarely get a result, either. And so that continued yesterday at the Cottage.
The title-chasing Reds went ahead through a perfect Trent Alexander-Arnold free-kick. Why he felt he had to shush the Hammersmith End is beyond me, but there we have it. But just before half-time, we were back in it. Timothy Castagne opened his account for the Whites with a striker’s hit (albeit via a slight deflection). You could see how happy his teammates were for him.
Level at the break, then, but the second half saw the gulf in quality come through. First, a ball up-field from Iwobi was intercepted, resulting in a 20-yard strike from Ryan Gravenberch. And 20 minutes later, Diogo Jota slotted home to seal the points.
It’s at this point that, statistically, this season falls behind the success of last term. We’ve now equalled our total number of losses – 16 – with four games left. And, perhaps surprisingly, seven of those have come at Craven Cottage (one more than the six recorded last season), despite our home form being the driving force behind our comfort in the league.
Nevertheless, comfortable is what we are. We have two London derbies on the horizon – and refreshingly we’ve not been too shabby at those this campaign. But games against Crystal palace and Brentford represent two chances of revenge, with both sides taking three points the last time we met. Who says there’s nothing left to play for? You Whites.
What they said
Marco Silva: The way we conceded the two goals, the second and the third goals during the second half, was really hard for us. We have to learn from that situation, for the future, to not happen again, because after that it was more difficult for us to react.
Timothy Castagne: We’re a bit disappointed. We know there was more in that game for us. We made some mistakes that cost us today - it happens. We know against these teams we need to be perfect, and today we weren’t.
Josh Hallmark: Having played Liverpool four times this season, this felt like our weakest attempt to stop them. Liverpool showed their quality, winning every second ball and proving why they’re title contenders. This wasn’t helped by a poor refereeing performance, however. With that said, our second half showing didn’t match the intensity of the first, with certain players starting stronger than they finished.
