Fulham 1-1 Liverpool (2-3 on aggregate) - the look back
It was a valiant effort from the boys, but ultimately the Carabao Cup run is over.
The journey’s over. For now.
We just fell short on Wednesday night at a packed Craven Cottage that was perfectly set up for the occasion.
Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, we knew an early goal would be crucial, and so it proved. Luis Dias scored after 11 minutes to stun the Cottage. Bernd Leno will be furious to have been beaten at his near post.
From there, we needed two to force extra time. We battled, but clubs like Liverpool are experienced in going deep in cup competitions and they did everything they had to do.
We equalised on the night with 15 minutes of normal time to go; substitute Harry Wilson carved out some space and fed - of all people - Issa Diop, who bundled home. The Cottage went bananas - and it felt like it could be on. But Liverpool’s experience shone through; they quelled the stirring crowd and before you knew it they had a free kick at the other end of the pitch - potentially comeback quashed.
But now’s not the time for an autopsy. It’s a time to look back with immense pride at where this side is under Marco Silva - and where it could go. What a time to be a fan. You Whites.
What they said
Marco Silva: From when we played against Tottenham we showed our ambition and our desire to go on in this competition. Our attitude was serious and our ambition we have to be proud of it. We kept the semi-finals open against the team which is at the top of the Premier League. We have to be proud of it.
Andreas Pereira: We’re proud - we fought until the last minute. Mixed emotions. Now we have to bounce back.
Jack Collins: Tough to take that. Given a really good side a square go over two legs, with truly not loads in it. Defended stoutly, played it smart (most of the time), tried to use the counter. Hurts, but proud of the Fulham.
