Fulham 0-1 Newcastle United - the look back
It's back-to-back defeats as we fail to capitalise on a strong first-half performance at the Cottage.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – these are the joys of midtable mediocrity.
Fulham lost to Newcastle on Saturday despite controlling the first half, and surviving a Newcastle going ahead, only for it to be ruled out.
Naivety has to play a role when, after a first half performance during which the Whites had 10 shots, Fabian Schar had the ball in the net just six minutes before Guimarães’s winner. The goal was chalked off VAR spotted a foul in the build-up. But Fulham failed to heed that warning, and Newcastle’s Brazilian hit the winner with just 10 minutes of normal time to go.
The loss means the Whites stay in 13th – in no danger of the drop, but with a battle for European qualification seemingly a step beyond us at this stage in the season. What does that leave? Were 14 points off equalling our record 53 points with 18 to play for, so you can count that out.
That leaves three derby Ws up for grabs against West Ham, Crystal Palace, and Brentford, and two chances to direct the Premier League title, with games against Liverpool and Man City to come. Let’s enjoy the fact we’re not in danger and take the joys as they come. Big summer ahead. You Whites.
What they said
Marco Silva: A really difficult result for us to take. The team that clearly deserved to win this match was Fulham Football Club. First half, from ourselves, there was a lack of finish in the attack to finalise the attacks and the moments we had. We created enough in the end to win the game. From the first minute of the game to the last, we created enough but we did not finalise the attacks with a goal.
Tom Cairney: They seem to be a bit of a bogey team, to be honest. I thought we played some really good football in the first half, and you’ve got to take your chances at this level.
Stephen Sheldrake: Marco Silva got the subs wrong against Newcastle today IMO. The match setup was brilliant and we looked the better side. When we changed it up we lost key ball retention from Cairney & Willian, didn't learn from the disallowed goal & were punished. Traore however was excellent.
