Chelsea 1-0 Fulham - The look back
Another defeat on the road for the Whites as they fall to Chelsea in the SW6 derby.
There was only a penalty between these two sides on the weekend but, truth be told, it was a below par performance from the Whites as we let Chelsea do the double over us.
It’s a far cry from the four points we scooped up last term across the two games, but the timing of this game was always going to be off, sandwiched between the two legs of our League Cup semi-final.
Cole Palmer scored from the spot after Raheem Sterling made the most of Issa Diop’s trailing leg - but as I always say: don’t make it easy for the referee in those instances.
The real controversy came 10 minutes earlier. Malo Gusto went in studs up on Willian, and landed them above him boot. He received a yellow for his efforts, and - somehow - VAR decided that was enough.
And that was it. A disappointing derby defeat, but one we could easily swallow if things go our way in the semi-final at the Cottage later this month. But for now, a short break for the boys to recharge. Then history awaits. You Whites.
What they said
Marco Silva: We have to talk about the red card for Gusto, it was clear. It is hard to see how things aren't consistent at the level that we're at. This is the Premier league. In 10 of those moments, nine times it is a red card.
Tom Cairney: It was a decent performance but we've come away with nothing. We've been picking up points at home but we need to pick up more points away from home in 2024. We've got a little bit of time to have a break now..
Cam Ramsey: Gusto, studs up and out of control, clamped down on Willian’s ankle, his foot rolled over the ball and our Brazilian felt the full impact of the Frenchman’s repulsive lunge and all that he received was a caution. Scandalous.
