Champions: a historic day for Fulham FC Women
It was a celebratory day at the Cottage as Fulham FC Women lifted their league championship.
Fulham Women, led by Head Coach Steve Jaye, found themselves just two matches away from achieving back-to-back undefeated seasons as Luton Town Ladies came to Craven Cottage to test their mettle.
It’s a feat that’s nothing short of spectacular, and a special occasion that would see FFCW lift a second consecutive league title to celebrate promotion from the National Women’s Division One South East.
With the champagne on ice, Fulham still had a job to do to not take their eye off the ball on this big occasion, as the Johnny Haynes Stand was full of football-hungry fans and families cheering on the home team beside the sunny banks of the Thames. Being clapped onto the pitch by a guard of honour from Luton in respect and recognition for their success, the league champions did not disappoint.
Fulham’s intentions were clear from the get-go: bring a high level of intensity from kick-off and kill the game early. It worked to a tee; before Luton could get going, a clinical attack on the left wing just three minutes in saw the Whites in the ascendancy. After some quick passing, the ball darted across the 18-yard box, which fell to striker Kayleigh Stead who slotted it home at the Hammersmith End to spark a huge roar from the crowd.
The Luton player’s efforts to calm their teammates down and regain composure were in vain as Fulham denied them the chance to catch their breath. Continuing their press and defence-splitting passes, the Whites pushed on, controlling the ball and dictating play with sheer dominance. It felt almost inevitable when Stella Gandee Morgan crossed the ball into the box to find forward Anna Grey in space, who stuck it home with ease to make it 2-0 to Fulham just six minutes in.
It was looking like a bad day at the office for Luton, similar to when the men;’s team lifted the Championship trophy in 2022, but they managed to find their resilience to shut the door on Fulham and even ask a few questions of keeper Frankie Gibbs to remind us they were very much still in the game.
While Fulham controlled the play, momentum started to switch direction and the players went into the dressing room two goals apart with a game still there to be won.
A feel-good factor was well and truly in force around the ground; there was a strong air of positivity in the atmosphere in anticipation for what was to come, and an appreciation for the occasion itself. It was a joy to witness a sea of friendly faces enjoying football in a safe and welcoming environment, with face-paint aplenty and many young fans attending their very first football match.
Onto the second half, and Fulham’s all-time top goal contributor Ellie Olds continued piling on the pressure up top as a false nine, one moment showing her strength and prowess as a centre-forward, the next out-wide bringing her teammates into play. Her dynamic performance was finally rewarded with a well-deserved goal as she smashed it past Luton keeper Janaye Beaufort on the 58th minute to finish the competition in style and seal the victory for Fulham. A strong contender for player-of-the-match in my opinion alongside Anna Grey.
A set of tactical substitutions were made following the hour mark to see the game out and give plenty of players opportunities on the big day, including the introduction of club captain Megalie Mendes. The home team continued to pressure the opposition goal, while seeing the game out comfortably in style. Resolute defensive performances from Izze Milne, Ella Tagliavini and Leeta Rutherford closed the door on Luton to secure the clean sheet.
As the final whistle blew to confirm a 3-0 victory. Familiar voice Ivan Berry announced Fulham as league champions and a DJ took over to kick-start the title party. With everyone in position, Meg and Steve were presented with the league trophy, and as the players raised the silverware high the pyrotechnics shot into the air to the sounds of an adoring crowd all taking part in the celebrations.
With a cup semi-final against Spurs around the corner, and a final league game to seal two seasons undefeated, there is still plenty for this talented side to play for. And the exciting challenge of third-tier football is just around the corner for this fast-rising team.
There’s never been a better time to go and support this magnificent squad, who according to their post-match interview in the Riverside, will be celebrating this achievement with their friends and families long after the final whistle.
