I was at this game after a great morning touring about with my son and Sunderland mate. Afterwards I got him to take me to the biggest Sunderland pub around and got well and truely pissed with their fans. I was telling them that this was the best result they had all season.
Remember it like yesterday. The one and only time I attended a football match with my father in law who despite being a Geordie and living in Jesmond was keen to attend a football match with me. We stayed at the Seaburn Hotel which happened to be where the Fulham squad was staying. We were always destined to lose the re-arranged fixture ...
Sammy, thanks for the vivid memory of your visit to Sunderland and the Brian McBride's goal. I also had a weird sighting of McBride scoring in a strange place. I was in St. Louis, Missouri, on business in about 1992 and I saw that the St. Louis University Billikens' soccer team was playing a home game that night. I decided to go and it turned out that their stadium was built for the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis (movie fans know it as the source of the famous Judy Garland movie, "Meet Me in St. Louis"). The stadium was old and dilapidated at that point and actually had signage from the fair. But the Billikens' Brian McBride was not old and dilapidated--he was young and obviously the best player on the pitch. He scored 2 excellent goals. I was very pleased when he ended up at Fulham and really enjoyed his career there. I imagine that there are many Fulham fans who saw McBride score in strange places and, like you, I feel privileged to have been there.
Lovely story for your first away match! My son and I did our first away to Man City. The last time we won there. You definitely win bragging rights though! Let’s hope for 1-0 Fulham today.
