One narrow point about our seemingly new 'youth' strategy, it is exciting (and I am for it) but it is not necessarily a lower cost option. According to the Premier League, squad costs for SCR include "player and head coach wages, agents’ fees and amortisation or impairment of transfer fees".
Signing younger players may reduce wage costs, but some of these players are coming in on substantial transfer fees. Amortising £30 million over a five year contract is £115k per week and when you add on wages it is far from clear that these are going to result in lower costs for the purpose of SCR than retaining more experienced players on higher wages, or signing older players on lower transfer fees.
Amortisation of these large transfer amounts will continue to be recorded as costs for the purpose of SCR for the duration of the contracts. The implications of the large transfers we have made for the likes of Smith-Rowe, Berge, Anderson, Kevin, Bobb and Charles (total of around £190 million) in recent times is to add on around £38 million of costs per year simply in amortisation, before we even factor in wages.
How the SCR works in practice is complex but given the amortisation of recent and future purchases it seems likely that in the future we will need to make major sales (at above book values) to remain compliant, which may mean selling the likes of King, Robinson or Bassey.
After seeing Castagne's new found freedom, out from right wing back, find two assists yesterday - to go with his Belgium WC exploits - would encourage Arbeloa to keep the 20 year old de Fougerolles, another World Cup starter, as a backup to the 3 - 30 yrs olds (Andersen/Castagne/Tete) and 3 - 29 yrs olds (Bassey/Robinson/Cuenca - sessegnon is 27).
To say there's no experience on the pitch is wrong. And further, as some pundits have suggested that the 20 year old go back out on loan again, is contrary to Jack. C.'s Fulham youth movement article.

Refreshing to see new blood being injected into what was a calcifying system. The dearth of experienced on-field players is concerning.
But yesterday's "performance" at Malaga is not a great start. Don't need that kind of behavior with young players. Silva was often guilty of taking players out of games from his sideline behavior. The carries a whiff of worse.
Great article, insightful and. thoughtful. Marco deserves many plaudits for being able to make a team out of many of the players rejected by SP. But I think he squandered some of our most talented youth team players. He was also responsible for bringing in some of our most experienced, and expensive players, some of who are a disappointment and who will be very difficult to move on. Many people have been urging us to transfer Harrison Reid, but Chelsea have brought in Henderson to act as a Mentor to the younger players. Both Harrison and TC will be vital in helping this young, exciting squad. We are at last, maybe out of necessity because of financial restraints, bringing in younger talent. Marco had a job and a contract to see out. Looking forward to someone who has new insights with something to prove.
What worries me is the lack of experience and nous in the squad . We lack leadership and “dog” in the team ever since Joao P and Mitro left. I hope we are not too naive when the season starts
We shall have a very talented young squad, but ultimately relagated. You cannot win battles with kids.
