13 Hammersmith End stunners
We've been lucky to witness some incredible goals over the years.
“What a hit son, what a hit.”
Harrison Reed’s 97th-minute equaliser will be replayed by engagement-farming X accounts for years to come (move over, Kasami at Selhurst Park). It was a helluva moment, for sure. But it was also fantastically taken.
Here are 13 more superb goals that we’ve been lucky enough to witness from the Hammersmith End.
Two important things to note here: we’ve gone for technique over moment (Reedy satisfied both, of course), and we’re talking in front of the 22-year-old incarnation of the Hammy End, so don’t come for me if we’ve not included a Johnny Haynes screamer.
Papa Bouba Diop v Manchester United (2004/05)
Our new (famously temporary) stand was just three months old when the Wardrobe walloped this equaliser in, running the length of the pitch to dance in front of the Cottage. Iconic.
Wayne Routledge v Leicester City (2006/07)
This was an injury-time winner, so we have moment ticked off (albeit it was an FA Cup third round replay), but this from our on-loan winger was tasty. He picks the ball up about 50 yards out on the right-hand side, dances past no fewer than three Leicester players, before making inroads into the box and slotting home.
Diomansy Kamara v Tottenham Hotspur (2007/08)
The first of three goals on this list from the great escape season, Kamara helped rescue a point in a game we had no business getting one from as we drew 3-3 with Spurs. This was an audacious bicycle after a long Chris Baird throw was headed on in the box. Perfect composure and confidence in the 90th minute.
Hameur Bouazza v Manchester City (2007/08)
Just three weeks later, French-born Algerian winger Bouazza smashed home what would be his only goal for the Whites, in another 3-3 draw. He scored a direct free kick to put us 2-1 up against Sven Goran-Erikson’s City. But the lead would last just two minutes. Welp.
Jimmy Bullard v Aston Villa (2007/08)
This one is remembered for the moment more than the goal itself, but it was a fantastic free-kick from banter account fodder Bullard. This 25-yarder secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over Aston Villa and helped Roy Hodgson to his first win in SW6. The rest is history.
Bobby Zamora v Shakhtar Donetsk (2009/10)
It’s not surprising that our run to the Europa League final featured some fantastic technical goals in front of the Hammy. The first on this list comes in the last 32. Bobby, pushing for a spot in the England squad ahead of the World Cup, smashed a 25-yard rifle in off the crossbar against a side widely regarded as putting on one of the most impressive opposition displays at Craven Cottage. Shout out to Zoltan Gera’s deft back-heeled assist, too.
Clint Dempsey v Juventus (2009/10)
Talk about combining a moment with technique. This is about as textbook a chip as you’ll ever see. Deuce collects the ball the ball, turns, sees an opportunity and sends it. The Hammersmith End falls into complete silence until it nestles in the net. Pandemonium.
Simon Davies v Hamburg (2009/10)
Who can forget this one? It is perhaps the most technically sublime goal of the lot. Pressure makes diamonds and this from our Welsh magician was a gem of a finish. He flicks up a pinpoint ball from Danny Muphy with his heel, touches it in front of him with his right foot get a yard on Hamburg defender Guy Demel and slots it home with his left. A tidal wave on the Thames.
Bryan Ruiz v Everton (2011/12)
From moment-laden technical brilliance to just great goals. Our Costa Rican forward, once held up as the new messiah when he signed for £10m in August 2011, showed us all why we should be excited two months later with a sumptuous dink against Everton. It brought the sides level with 20 minutes to play. Sadly, the Toffees scored twice more in injury time to put the game out of sight.
Giorgios Karagounis v Blackpool (2012/13)
A half volley on the absolute corner of the box? Into the postage stamp on the far side of the goal? Giorgios, you spoil us. Our Greek freak treated us to an absolute worldie in January 2013, equalising against Blackpool in the FA Cup third round. What is it about this round of the FA Cup that generates such special goals?
Lasse Vigen Christensen v Huddersfield Town (2014/15)
LVC was a bright light in an otherwise all-time stinker of a season. He collected the ball after Bryan Ruiz (playing in the Champ - odd) failed to control it, played a neat one-two with Hugo Rodallega (playing in the Champ - odd) and finished coolly. The win kept us a point above the Championship drop zone. In November. Crikey.
Tom Cairney v Leeds United (2016/17)
It simply would not be a complete list of Hammy End stunners without the king, would it? We were battling to stay in the play-off chase and TC was against this old club (moment: checked). Neeskens Kebano teed him up on the right-hand side of the box; TC looks up and fires. Net busted. Point secured.
Harry Wilson v Brentford (2024/25)
None of us need reminding about this game - but plenty won’t mind it! 1-0 down to the Bees in injury time. Sander Berge picks the ball up and feeds Adama on the right. Traore crosses in and who else but Harry Wilson manages to pirouette and flick the ball in with his heel. It’s a goal you have to watch half a dozen times to truly understand the wizardry at hand. Sure, there’s the headed winner minutes later, but the first is the true sauce. It was the last technically breathtaking Hammy End goal until this past weekend. Here’s to many, many more.

1974 - Alan Mullery - goal of the season. I was there!
